Director of Electrical Engineering

Innovate Consulting is seeking a director of electrical engineering for a company who build utility-grade switchboards and switchgear for data centers, solar interconnection, and industrial uptime—fast, stocked in Sacramento, and built to NEC, UL, ANSI, and IEEE. This Director owns the integrity of every BOM, schematic, and handoff so Leads and Engineers of Record can design at speed without sacrificing safety or schedule.

Performance Objectives

  • Staff, develop, and manage the EE function through Leads and EORs so the right engineer is on the right project and coverage gaps close within one assignment cycle.
  • Serve as final technical authority on design disagreements and high-risk, large-dollar packages; resolve disputes with documented engineering judgment that manufacturing, quality, and sales can execute.
  • Own engineering data integrity—drawings, BOMs, calculators, and records—so procurement and production receive current, accurate information on every job.
  • Standardize design workflows, review/approval gates, and Microsoft 365 interfaces so throughput and first-pass quality stay consistent as volume grows.
  • Coach Leads and EORs into stronger independent decision-makers; raise team capability without doing their day-to-day design work.
  • Clear escalated electrical issues from Factory Witness Tests and the floor that threaten safety, quality, or ship dates.
  • Partner on NPI and proposals so new switchgear and solar-ready designs move from concept to production without rework or code risk.

Environment & Resources

You report into operations leadership and work on-site across BPP’s Sacramento-area plants with mechanical engineering, CAD, manufacturing, quality, sales, and project management. You manage through the existing Lead EE and EOR structure, not individual drawing boards. Tools include AutoCAD/SolidWorks Electrical/EPLAN-class systems, design calculators, and Microsoft 365. Budget and headcount follow growth from a 51–200 person manufacturer with decades of stocked-component, quick-turn capability.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering (or related) plus 8+ years designing power distribution, switchgear, or switchboards in a manufacturing environment.
  • Prior leadership of electrical engineering teams; proven ability to manage through Leads/EORs rather than individual designs.
  • High-level design review skill: spot risk, close technical disputes, and protect large-dollar customer exposure.
  • Deep working knowledge of NEC, UL 891/67, ANSI, and IEEE as they apply to LV/MV switchboards and switchgear.
  • Track record of process, standards, and engineering-data systems that scale quality and throughput.
  • Comfort with controls/automation and cross-functional escalation from test and the shop floor.
