Innovate consulting is seeking a dynamic and experienced R&D Engineer to lead projects and design new products for one of our power distribution and engineering clients for an onsite role in the Houston, TX area. The ideal candidate will bring a deep technical knowledge of switchgear and switchboard design, a passion for mentoring engineers, and a strong understanding of industry standards and requirements.

About the Client: Our client is a premier, established manufacturer of custom electrical control packages and power distribution equipment. They are seeking a Senior Research & Development Engineer to lead the design, evolution, and testing of their next-generation product lines.

Position Overview: This role bridges the gap between electrical functionality and robust mechanical design. While heavily rooted in electrical principles, the ideal candidate must bring strong mechanical design expertise specifically tailored to medium and low-voltage switchgear solutions. You will own projects from initial 3D modeling through to rigorous physical testing and compliance validation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Mechanical & Electrical Integration: Lead the mechanical design and structural layout of low to medium-voltage switchgear, control panels, and custom power distribution enclosures.
  • 3D Modeling & Simulation: Utilize 3D CAD platforms to develop precise models, assemblies, and manufacturing drawings.
  • Standard & Compliance Ownership: Ensure all designs strictly adhere to industry standards, specifically NEC and ASME regulations.
  • End-to-End R&D Testing: Define testing protocols, oversee the physical execution of prototype testing, and iterate designs based on performance data to guarantee structural and electrical integrity.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience: Proven track record in an product development or R&D engineering role, with deep domain expertise in low/medium voltage switchgear or closely related power distribution products.
  • CAD Proficiency: Advanced, hands-on experience with SolidWorks or Autodesk Inventor for 3D modeling and sheet metal design.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Strong working familiarity with NEC (National Electrical Code) and ASME standards.
  • Testing Mindset: Direct experience handling both the design phase and the physical testing/validation phases of equipment development.
